Speeding Measures

I wrote this paper a few years ago about a potential solution to peoples concern about speeding in MiraBay.

We will need to understand there is a cost and O&M going forward, and are we going to actually solve a problem by implementing such measures?

I personally have seen these signs in action all over Europe and they appear to produce the desired results, anyway, please take a look at this paper and let me know what you think?

I believe a reasonable alternative that studies repeatedly have shown that when alerted by a Radar Speed Sign; the study concludes that speeders WILL slow down up to 80% of the time. Typical average speed reductions are 10-20%, and overall compliance with the posted speed limit will increase by 30-60%. … Radar Signs Show Long Term Reduction in Speeding Drivers, and we only need a small amount of them in this community.

Radar Speed Signs Tell Rural Motorists To Slow Down

The speed signs display the speed of motorist, if the motorist exceeds the speed limit then a message flashes “slow down” and white light pulses. The device can be set to flash at a certain speed above the limit. The goal is to alert motorists about their speed.

Various Vehicle Activated Signs used to flesh messages to tell about slow down the speed to motorists.

Radar speed signs are effective in slowing cars down, particularly with today’s highly visual, often distracted drivers. These signs also called speed display signs, driver feedback signs, and “your speed” signs, radar signs operate based on the feedback loop theory.

Extensive research has proven that feedback loops affect real and positive change on people’s behavior. These displays signs have been shown to slow drivers an average of 10%, usually for several miles. Radar Feedback Sign offers driver feedback signs that are attractive, easy to operate, and affordable.

* 85th percentile indicates that 85% of the speeds captured were at this speed or less. Therefore 15% of the speeds were higher

For each road the data was broken down into three-time frames to represent morning, afternoon and evening. Captured speeds were 15 miles per hour or higher. For Islebay Drive 12,073 speeds were captured with an average speed of 20.76 mph. The 85th percentile speed was 25.0 mph. This means 85 % of all speeds captured were 25.0 mph or less. You can see the data for Mirabay Blvd and Manns Harbor Drive as well as by specific time frame. Based on the data there is more of a problem on Mirabay Blvd than Islebay or Manns Harbor but would not characterize either as very problematic.
